We are deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Manuel Calvo García (1956-2020) yesterday, 21 June. Full Professor of Philosophy of Law and Sociology of Law at the University of Zaragoza, and Scientific Director of the Oñati International Institute for the Sociology of Law (2002-2003).
He was the author of a relevant and very innovative scientific body of work, in which he combined the attention to general aspects of Theory of Law and Sociology of Law with the applied research in the field of the efficacy of law in several scopes of social law and human rights, especially in gender equality, gender-based violence, protection of children and adolescents, juvenile justice, protection of the most disadvantaged, and democratic participation.
In addition to his academic output, his affable personality, always ready for collaboration and for dialogue, and his commitment with equality and justice, both in academia as well as in legal and political institutions, granted him the respect and the affection of everybody who had the opportunity to meet him.
As Scientific Director of the Oñati International Institute for the Sociology of Law, in which he left fond and lasting memories, Professor Calvo García helped to establish links with Spanish and Latin American universities, and fostered a very close partnership with the justice system both within the framework of the state as well as in the autonomous communities.
