Toribio Medina, Mireya

I am a doctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) within the European Research Council research project 'Urban Terrorism in Europe (2004-2019): Remembering, Imagining, and Anticipating Violence'. My research aims to analyse the impact of the narratives on terrorism on the effective guarantee of human rights from 2004 to present in Spain.

I hold a bachelor's degree in law (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), and master’s degrees in criminal justice (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), and legal practice (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos). I have so far developed my professional career mostly in academia as a research assistant at two major projects at the University of Oxford (2016-2019). I have also worked as a lawyer at a firm specialising in criminal law and human rights (Ollé & Sesé, 2019-2020) where I had the opportunity to work on cases related to my current project such as the so-called 'Alsasua case'.   

My research interests are those related to criminal law, policy, and their societal impact. I have had the chance to publish and present at conferences in different institutions such as the Universities of Salford and Manchester, the II Global Congress on Human Rights (Lamego, Portugal), and Keble College (University of Oxford) which has exposed me to valuable peer review. I am also a member of the Howard League for Penal Reform.
