Bakan, Joel

Joel Bakan is Professor of Law and Distinguished University Scholar at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia. A former Rhodes Scholar and law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada, he is a leading internationally recogjized scholar in socio-legal studies, economic law, and constitutional law. Bakan’s recent book and film, The New Corporation (2020), received international acclaim and numerous awards, including, for the film, best documentary director and writer nominations for Bakan at the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards. The New Corporation is a sequel to Bakan’s award-winning and widely translated book and film, The Corporation (2004). Other of Bakan’s works include Just Words (1997) and Childhood Under Siege (2012), as well as numerous contributions to scholarly journals, edited collections, text books, and media.
